Instead of books, students at Alexander Dawson Elementary are filling their back packs with food to help other students in need.
Rex Bell Elementary is an at-risk school with 80 percent of its student body receiving free breakfasts and lunch. Many are sent home with back packs full of food to eat over the weekend. Without the back pack program the kids go without eating.
Students at Alexander Dawson put together 124 backpacks filled with food, which they handed over to Tim Adams, the principal at Rex Bell. Adams said, "you hold your emotions back, but it's an incredible site to see the enthusiasm these students had. The fact that they took this on, you hear some of them talking about spending their Christmas money on helping kids. It's great."
The back packs will be distributed at Rex Bell before spring break so the kids will have food to eat during the long week away from school.
Fourth grader Jacob Langsner said "I have a lot of things and they don't have as many things as I do. I feel grateful for it."
