RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Desert Research Institute has named a genetics researcher the winner of its 2009 Nevada Medal for outstanding international achievement in science, engineering and technology.

Francis Sellers Collins served as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute from 1993 to 2008. He's known for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the international Human Genome Project.

DRI President Stephen Wells says Collins' work may lead to real advances in the way diseases are treated. He says improving quality of life is the highest achievement for a scientist.

Collins will receive the DRI award at the 22nd annual Nevada Medal awards ceremony April 7 at the Peppermill Hotel Casino in Reno and April 9 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
