Annual AFAN Walk Brings Out Thousands To Battle AIDS

Updated:

The annual AIDS Walk on Sunday drew out thousands who are in a fight against HIV/AIDS.

Agencies that help those living with the disease have seen a cut in funding and they say that's why this fundraiser is needed now more than ever as AFAN, Aid For AIDS of Nevada, lost more than $100,000 in state funding.

It's crucial money that provides for a nutritionist and an onsite nurse to help those living with AIDS in the Valley. Sunday's fundraiser is meant to help cover that gap. Despite the tough economic times, organizers say the fundraiser was a success.

Close to 8,000 people came out to walk in honor of loved ones lost to raise AIDS awareness.

Participant Matt Montaldo said, "It's inspiring to see people come together to see them fight this disease."  And Jayne Samuels talked about AIDS far reaching effects, "We've seen HIV/AIDS related diseases touch our lives and people we love and care about for a long time there needs to be more awareness and research."

The AIDS Walk is one of AFAN's largest fundraisers. It's one for the whole family as people with young kids, even their dogs, came out and there were many teams holding special signs or wearing t-shirts in memory of a loved one.

The walk started at shortly after 10 a.m. at the World Market Center. If you missed your chance this year you can definitely participate next year. The grand total raised was $400,000 dollars, slightly under last year's amount.
