OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) - An Oroville man who jumped into the Feather River in an attempt to flee authorities is now under investigation for an apparent homicide.
Dewayne Carter, 27, jumped into the river Monday after he was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer. Carter was apprehended after a half-mile swim down the river.
Police discovered that the car Carter was driving belonged to Gabriel Melendez Huerta, a 54-year-old Yuba City man whose body was discovered at his home Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the Yuba City Police Department, Shawna Pavey, said officers are treating the investigation as a murder case.
