CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Negotiations for closing the state budget stalled again late Monday when key Nevada lawmakers failed to reach agreement on funding for higher education.
Earlier in the day, lawmakers involved in the negotiations said they were close to an agreement on a spending plan for higher education for the next two fiscal years that would have cuts far lower than the 36% reductions proposed by Gov. Jim Gibbons.
"It's so complicated, and it's silly when you think about it," said Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-North Las Vegas. "Everyone wants to get the higher education numbers as low as possible."
The "core group" lawmakers involved in the negotiations would not say what exactly was holding up their closed-door negotiations. Talks are scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
