Garehime Elementary is teaching kids about life in a grown-up world through an inner-school community bustling with business.
Jarred Yanez is a fifth grade entrepreneur, "donuts and juice is what we sell in the morning. Pizza and juice is what we sell in the afternoon. It just gives a real life experience of where we turn profits and stuff like that."
The profits are determined by Garehime gold. The gold is the money. It's earned throughout the year for good behavior and donations. Students can save their money in a bank, invest it, or spend it.
You can find just about everything at Garehime Heights including a chocolate business run by a classroom, a company that recycles paper and creates journals and greeting cards.
There are balloon hats to buy and advertisers pitching their products in the hallways. Shelley Kresyman, the school's principal says, "the coolest thing about our city is that students are enjoying themselves while they are using the skills that they have learned in math, social studies, reading and science."
According to Kresyman, none of the businesses have asked for a bail out.
