RENO, Nev. (AP) - Three young scientists at a week-long science fair in Reno have been awarded $50,000 scholarships for their work.
The projects honored explored learning genes in tiny organisms, detecting water pollution using glowing bacteria, and evolutionary links between bees and microscopic worms.
The winners are 14-year-old Tara Adiseshan of Charlottesville, Va., 17-year-old Li Boynton of Bellaire, Texas, and 16-year-old Olivia Schwob of Boston.
More than 1,500 high school students from 56 countries around the world were chosen as finalists at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair organized by the Society for Science & the Public.
Intel Corp., the world's largest computer chip maker, is the title sponsor. In all, it awarded nearly $4 million in scholarships through its foundation.
