Cool at School: Serving Kids with Unique Disabilities

Updated:

Helen J. Stewart is one of four special schools in Clark County that serves kids with unique disabilities.

It can be challenging but a brand new greenhouse is helping the kids learn about daily living. Simple things like watering plants teach students about every day skills.

That's why Helen J. Stewart teachers and staff are so happy to have the $70,000 greenhouse used from money left behind in a trust by a community member.

The most important lesson students learn from working in the greenhouse is how to work together and how to communicate.

Marissa Calcaterra is a Helen J. Stewart special education teacher: "We really try to make a progression starting from a seed, seeing that sprout and then going from a small pot to a big pot to a larger pot and that way the kids can see the progression and it helps with sequencing as well."

Calcaterra also says planting gives the students a sense of pride.
