Las Vegas NowCool at School: Making Some Noise
The sounds of the Vegas Vanguard drum line come from a melting pot of talent that is city-wide.
Brian Howerton is the executive director, "We have high school kids mixed in with college kids and university kids. It could be five different high schools from freshmen to juniors in college. It's a nice mix of young and old, inexperienced and experienced."
This drum line recently laid claim to the gold medal at the Southern California Percussion Alliance Championships.
C.J. Goeckner is a UNLV freshman, "It teaches you a lot about discipline, a lot about hard work, what you need to do in life, preparing, learning a lot about friendship."
The drum line holds auditions Wednesday May 20th and again in September. Practices are after school and they love taking their act out on the road.
Sean Wyatt, a Spring Valley High School junior says, "We are from all different parts of Las Vegas and we came together as one. So, it's pretty cool."
