Reno mayor calls Nevada governor a liar

Associated Press - May 19, 2009 9:55 PM ET

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Reno Mayor Bob Cashell said Tuesday that Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons was lying when he said he'd support a gas tax increase if approved by the voters.

Cashell is angry that Gibbons has said he'll veto the legislation authorizing the Washoe County Commission to increase the motor vehicle fuel tax, a proposal that passed with 55% of the vote in November.

Gibbons called Cashell's choice of words "very, very unfortunate," saying he never promised to sign a specific bill. He also said the bill, SB201, doesn't match the advisory question approved by voters.

SB201 would allow the county commission to increase the gas tax by the rate of inflation on construction costs. It's expected to generate $2.6 billion over 30 years, revenue the Regional Transportation Commission would use to finance about $250 million in bonds to fund road projects.
