CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons vetoed two more bills on Saturday, including one calling for hospital staffing plans to ensure adequate nurse-to-patient ratios and safety of patients.
Advocates of AB121 said that when nurses have too many people to look after, there's a risk of patients dying. But Gibbons said the bill "unnecessarily legislates in an area that should be addressed by medical professionals and health care management."
The governor also vetoed AB410, saying it would allow collective bargaining agreements to supersede state laws on industrial insurance and that "would lead to a plethora of unintended consequences."
The vetoes bring Gibbons' total of vetoes during this legislative session to seven. He was overridden on one, dealing with a bill authorizing the state's water engineer to impose higher fees. The lawmakers' override vote to preserve AB480 was the first of its sort since 1989.
