New Anti-Gang Laws Target Recruitment, School Policies

Updated:

Two new anti-gang laws passed by Nevada lawmakers and signed by Gov. Jim Gibbons punish adult gang members who recruit minors and require school districts to establish policies that ban criminal gang activity on campuses.

SB142 makes it a low-level felony for adult gang members who use or threaten violence to force minors to join, remain in or rejoin a gang. Those convicted under the law could be imprisoned for one to four years and face fines of up to $5,000.

AB154 requires school districts to establish policies barring criminal gang activity on school grounds. The bill sponsor, Assemblyman Harvey Munford, D-Las Vegas, says policies such as banning clothing affiliated with gangs already are in place, but a mandate is needed because no part of Nevada is immune to gang activity.
