All sorts of brain diseases might one day be helped by a discovery made by UNLV researchers. They have discovered a way to get medication directly to a diseased spot in the brain.
The breakthrough has the potential to one day save many, many lives. Dr. Steen Madsen, an associate professor in the UNLV Department of Health Physics, says one of the biggest problems in treating brain cancer is that the blood brain barrier must be breached, which leaves the whole brain susceptible to damage from chemotherapy or even infection.
He and his collaborators have discovered a way to pinpoint the area that's diseased, so the rest of the brain is still protected.
"And that is not only a problem for cancer therapy, it is also a problem for other types of brain pathologies for example Alzheimer's, strokes and also for Parkinson's disease as well. So this is a significant problem," said Dr. Madsen.
Dr. Steen collaborated with Dr. Henry Hershburg at University of California Irvine with help from the Nevada Cancer Institute. Dr. Steen stresses, this is in the preliminary stages.
