Rain clouds over Mt. Charleston. Photo courtesy of Nick Oliva, a Mt. Charleston resident.A strong summer storm raged through the outlying areas of the Las Vegas valley, and Mount Charleston was hit hard by thunderstorms. The downpour dumped a lot of rain and even hail and it was over quickly.
The entire mountain was drenched, and it wasn't just rain left behind. One resident, Nick Oliva, braved the storm and captured some amazing pictures. "I saw two huge bolts go right into the side of that mountain. My cell phone knocked out. All I know is that my hair jumped up. I'm not sure if that was the fear or the static electricity," he said.

Nick managed to snap a photo of hail coming down on the mountain. He described it as a bucket of golf balls being poured onto the mountain. He also saw lightning strike about 250 feet from his home. It shook his house.
He says the whole thing lasted about 2 hours and fifteen minutes. "In the beginning, it was a phenomenon -- your hair raises up, it's a little exciting and then after the first hour, when it started getting more and more intense, it got a little scary because it just didn't stop," he said.
Red Rock Canyon also got some rain, but it wasn't too strong. In fact, tourists and residents sat and just watched the storm, enjoying the cooler weather.
As for Mount Charleston, that was a lot cooler. In just 10 minutes the temperature changed from the mid-90's all the way down to 60 degrees.
