About two dozen wild horse advocates rallied outside the state capitol complex to protest the Nevada Department of Agriculture's handling of wild horses that they claim violate state law.
Critics claim the agency has rescinded cooperative agreements with nonprofit groups that work to find homes for the animals taken from the Virginia Range, and is taking shortcuts to get rid of them through private, non-advertised sales.
A spokesman for Gov. Jim Gibbons says the criticisms are being looked into by the agriculture department and the state attorney general's office.
Agriculture department spokesman Ed Foster says the agency did rescind some contracts with horse groups, but has retained others based on their results.
He says the agency's actions are "100 percent above board."
