A number of Republicans say Judge Brian Sandoval's decision to resign from the federal bench is a sign he's going to challenge Gov. Jim Gibbons in a Republican primary next year.
Retired state archivist Guy Rocha says no other federal judge in Nevada has given up the lifetime appointment for politics. The closest comparison was a judge who campaigned for the U.S. Senate in 1902 without resigning.
Sandoval hasn't disclosed his future plans. A former state assemblyman and attorney general, he was seen as a rising star in the Republican party.
UNR political scientist Eric Herzik says he's one of the few bright spots the Nevada GOP has had in the last two years. Washoe District Judge Jerry Polaha says he would make a "stellar candidate."
