FURNACE CREEK, Calif. (AP) -- The California Highway Patrol says two French teenagers were killed and five other French nationals injured when the driver of their van fell asleep, causing the vehicle to run off the road and roll over.
Patrol Capt. Tim Lepper said Sunday that the accident occurred Saturday morning on State Route 190, about 100 miles west of Las Vegas. The French consul in Los Angeles, David Martinon, says the group was traveling from Las Vegas to California's Death Valley National Park. Lepper says a 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old girl were killed, and four other teenagers were injured, two of them seriously.
The driver was identified as 31-year-old Nassera Soudani, who was also seriously injured. France's Foreign Ministry says the victims were on an organized tour.
