Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center has begun handling patients at a new top-level neonatal intensive care unit and an expanded special care nursery.
Hospital spokeswoman Naomi Jones says certification for the 18-bed NICU came from the Nevada Department of Health & Human Services on Aug. 26.
The southwest Las Vegas hospital joins several others in the region with Level III intensive care units for premature and special-needs newborns. Its $9.4 million expansion project began in the spring of 2008. It included adding three beds to the hospital's Level II special care nursery.
Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center is an all private, 231-bed acute care facility several miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.
