Reid to NV Governor: Deny Permits for Garbage Dump

Updated:

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is urging Gov. Jim Gibbons to "use every available authority" to block a proposal by a California company to dispose of tons of household trash from the San Francisco area in a landfill near Winnemucca.

In a letter Wednesday, the Senator Majority Leader called the proposal by Recology a "threat to Nevada's sovereignty and dignity," and urged Gibbons to direct the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to deny permits for the project.

Reid said the targeted site is in an active seismic impact zone, and that no engineered barriers or liners would protect the area's aquifer.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal over the weekend reported that Recology proposes to haul 20 tons of garbage weekly from Northern California to the site for 95 years.
