Great Basin National Park to Appear on Quarter

Updated:

Great Basin National Park in Nevada will be featured as part of a line of "America the Beautiful" quarters that debut next year.

The U.S. Mint says the quarters will be issued in the order that the various places were established as national sites.

The Nevada quarter will be issued in 2013 and is the 18th planned in the program.

The park features the Lehman Caves, which can be entered only with a guided tour. The marble caves have stalactites, stalagmites and more than 300 rare shield formations.

Also in the park is Wheeler Peak, the second highest peak in Nevada. It reaches 13,063 feet.

The National Park Service Web site says Lehman Caves National Monument was established Jan. 24, 1922. Great Basin National Park was established Oct. 27, 1986.
