North Las Vegas Police Unveil New Crime Map

Updated:

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nv -- People living in the North Las Vegas can track crime via the internet. They can find out what's going on where they live, where the kids go to school, or even the parks their kids play in.

You can type in the category of crime, auto theft, burglary, narcotics, homicide, and then you find a location, and see what pops up. It's this tool that police hope will help keep people alert to what's happening where they live.

Routine errands like getting your car washed seem pretty safe. But for people like North Las Vegas resident Charlotte Anderson, doing this during the day is a way for her to avoid being a victim of crime. "Who wants to get robbed or killed? You want to be safe when you go out and you don't want to feel like you're looking behind you to make sure nobody is following you," she said.

Anderson moved to North Las Vegas in the early 90's from Chicago and has seen the city grow. But with growth, comes the increase in crime.

North Las Vegas Police launched a new web site where residents can find out what types of crime are happing near them.

"We want them to access the data anytime they need it and get all the information they want," said Sandra Sawyer with NLVPD.

Sawyer is a civilian employee of the NLVPD and has been working with her staff to get the site going for a faster way to keep the community informed. "We have the most current 90 days and the data is updated every 24 hours," she said.

Bright colored symbols for crimes describe the type of incident that has happened. "I think it will stop crime to an extent and that's what we need," said Anderson.

There is another feature called Cyber Watch. You can type your email address and anytime there is a crime that happens in your area, you will immediately get an email sent to you.
