I-Team: Former Federal Judge Enters Governor's Race

Updated:

Less than a full day after his retirement from the federal bench, Brian Sandoval begins his campaign for Nevada governor, anointed already by some political insiders as the favorite to defeat Republic incumbent Jim Gibbons in the primary.

Judicial ethics prevented Brian Sandoval from engaging in political activity while on the bench, so he's quick to point out he has yet to develop a focused platform.

That said, Sandoval felt "duty bound" to enter the race, even though it meant the sacrifice of a lifetime appointment. "It was a privilege to serve as a federal judge and as time went on while I sat on the bench, I became concerned about what was going on in the state of Nevada and thought perhaps I could make a positive difference for the people of this state," he said.

Sandoval, a Republican, refuses to levy specific criticism at Gibbons. Though he acknowledges the unusual step of challenging a republican incumbent. "

Sandoval insists his experience as a two-time state assemblyman, chair of the Nevada Gaming Commission, and Attorney General make him the better choice to lead Nevada.

"First and foremost, Governor Gibbons has done what he thought was right and my decision to get into the race has nothing to do with Governor Gibbons. I think I bring a unique skill set having served in all three branches of government. I have a record of creating consensus to solve problems," he said.

Sandoval says he will not sign the anti-tax pledge, however he does not believe raising taxes in tough times is the solution to the budget crisis.

Opponents have criticized Sandoval for leaving both his assembly seat and his post as AG mid-term. However he commits if he's elected he will complete his term as governor.
