CityCenter Wrapping Up Hiring

Updated:

LAS VEGAS, Nv -- MGM Mirage's CityCenter announced that they intend to launch the "single largest hiring effort in the nation" on Monday. The announcement came at the same time the state released record unemployment numbers. Some lucky applicants received their job offers on Friday.

With more than 180,000 unemployed Nevadans, jobs are scarce and competition is stiff. Some experts believe Nevada has hit the peak for unemployment. Will the massive hiring by the MGM Mirage make a difference?

On Friday the resort offered jobs to internal candidates who already work at the MGM Mirage. On Monday, CityCenter will extend thousands of more job offers to people from all over the country.

"I have heard comments from applicants like 'I feel like I have won the lottery and that my time has finally come,'" said Kelley Tucky, CityCenter vice president of staffing. One of her tasks was to call Brittany Lambert so she could fill out her paperwork for her new job. Lambert has worked for MGM Mirage for three years and applied for a new position. She is excited about the new CityCenter. "Being a part of something that no one else has seen before," said Lambert.

She accepted an administrative assistant position in leisure sales. She wanted to work at CityCenter to launch her plan of a job in sales one day at the resort.

Analyst Jeremy Aguero says it's a shot in the financial arm, but not enough to make a big dent in unemployment figures.

"Combine CityCenter jobs, the Hard Rock restaurant opening up and hiring some folks, the fact that the school district is going to have to hire a few more folks. It starts adding up and starts gaining momentum. Momentum is what we need now," said Aguero.

The MGM Mirage hiring will put 10,000 people in new jobs but more than 160,000 people applied for those jobs.

"We will be ready. The doors open in December. This is just the beginning," said Tucky.  She hopes CityCenter provides job growth momentum for the entire area. The people hired now for CityCenter will see their first paycheck at the end of November.

The company is still accepting applications for jobs that will be vacated when employees move to the new property.

CityCenter has also announced the official opening dates for the project's various properties:

  • Dec 1 - Vdara Hotel
  • Dec 3 - Crystals
  • Dec 4 - Mandarin Oriental
  • Dec 16 - ARIA Resort and Casino

The various properties of MGM's mega-resort project have been holding job fairs during much of 2009 and began accepting applications in January of this year.
