State Sees First Homeowner Under New Program

Updated:

A single mother of four on an income of about $30,000 a year is now a homeowner through the help of the neighborhood stabilization program that provides federal and state funding.

Shana Andrea knew she wanted the three bedrooms, two-bathroom home for her kids, but didn't think she could afford it. Now through federal money, she is the first person in the state to buy a home through the Neighborhood Stabilization Act.

"It's our first home ever, so for us, it's a really big deal. We are just thrilled," she said. "I needed to have $1,500 in the bank for two months, attend a first time homebuyers class on a Saturday. Once I completed those two things, I could put my name on a list."

Less than week later, the City of Henderson called her and the process started -- a process that could not have come any sooner according to her daughter. "We've been almost homeless a couple of times. It's been hard to get the money for bills, for food, getting to school when the car breaks down. It's very hard," said Meagan Goodney.

It was also something Shana never thought she could afford. "Considering that I make less than $30,000 a year, and that I bought this home for $49,500 and my payments are $426 a month, I think that anybody who wants a home should call the cities and get together with these programs," she said.

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen presented Andrea and her family with the keys. "Neighborhood stabilization funds are exactly what we need to revitalize neighborhoods," he said.

And bring families the happiness that comes with having a place to call home. "My mom's always been afraid she hasn't been able to do enough for us and she doesn't realize she's gone past that point and made us happy," said Meagan.

Through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, $25,000 of work was paid for through federal and state money on the new house and $3,000 more was available to help on closing costs for Andrea and her kids.
