Mammograms are essential for early breast cancer detection. Thanks to a grant from the Breast Cancer Relief Foundation, uninsured women can get a mammogram for free next Monday through Thursday, October 5th to 9th.
Free Mammograms for Uninsured Women Oct 5-9, 2009
The Nevada Cancer Institute will park its mobile mammography unit at the William Pearson Community Center. That's at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Carey Avenue in Las Vegas
The "Hope Coach" will give free mammograms to uninsured women between age 40 and 60.
No appointments are necessary, but it is first come, first served.
Organizer Rosemary West says this is a great way to help women in our community, especially during these tough times. She told us, "It's just a wonderful way for us to help women to obtain these lifesaving screenings. You know breast cancer kills 300 women in Nevada every year and if we can change that number by screening women early and getting them the treatment they need fast, and extend their lives, what a great thing to do."
The Hope Coach will start doing mammograms on Monday October 5th from 1:30pm to 5pm.
They will be back again Tuesday through Thursday from 7:30am to 5 pm. The mobile mammography unit will be at the corner of Martin Luther King Drive and Carey Avenue in Las Vegas.
To qualify, you must be 40 to 60 years old, have not had a mammogram in the last year, and have no health insurance.
If you can't make it out during those four days.. During the rest of October, The Nevada Cancer Institute will be offering mammograms to uninsured women for only 50 dollars.

Short Hike Helps Raise Funds for Diabetes Research
A great way to get some exercise, and help a great cause is this weekend's annual "step out: walk for diabetes" at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park in far west Las Vegas. You will help raise money for research toward a cure.
One team of walkers is actually a team all year. They're "Xtreme Storm", and they rehearse at the Vitaly Scherbo school of gymnastics in Las Vegas. The competitive cheerleaders have more than a dozen trophies, but their goal on Saturday is a lofty one: they'll be walking to help cure diabetes.
Their captain, Ariana Frayer, has type one diabetes, and she says she's thrilled to lead the team at tomorrow's event. She told us, "when I first heard that my team does actually go out to the walk every year and they said, we're gonna do the step out for diabetes walk, I was like.. Oh that's cool I have diabetes!"
The team's assistant coach, Melissa Beebe, describes Ariana as fun and dynamic. "Ariana is our captain and to be as amazing a person as she is and to be overcoming this- what could a very debilitating disease- and she is taking care of herself and the team is just behind her for that and we just love her for that."
"Team Ariana" hopes to raise two thousand dollars.
If you'd like to help, you can donate to "Team Ariana" at the American Diabetes Association's Step Out website.. And if you'd like to join the walk, you can sign up yourself! Or just show up at 9am and register at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. The walk starts at 10am.
You can choose of walk of one, two, or three miles. I hope to see you on Saturday! Tedd Florendo will be there with me, and he promises great weather.
