Ex-County Official Sentenced in Bribery Conviction

Posted: Updated:

A former Nye County commissioner has been sentenced to five years' probation for his conviction in a felony bribery case.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said Thursday that Peter Gust Liakopoulos was also sentenced Monday to 500 hours of community service and attendance at an ethics class at his expense.

Liakopoulos was convicted July 1 of trying to bribe a Pahrump Town Board member in 2007 with a promise to vote for a half-cent sales tax increase in exchange for a vote to appoint his wife as curator of a proposed veterans museum.

He was found guilty of felony asking or receiving a bribe, and misdemeanor offering reward for appointment and grafting by public officer.

He is expected to appeal his case to the Nevada Supreme Court.
