It may not be a full-time job, but some unemployed Las Vegas residents say they're willing to take on just about anything if it means getting a paycheck. The upcoming holiday season may provide a little bit of relief for families who are strapped for cash.
For Willy Keeley, the upcoming holiday season may bring some much-needed good news -- seasonal work is up for grabs. "Bills are piling up and I'm trying to take care of what I can with the little unemployment I get, but it is never enough," he said.
The construction worker came to CSN's career fair in hopes of finding a job after being unemployed for more than a year. He made it a point to stop at almost every booth, from UPS to Bass Pro Shops. "It's hard out there when you don't have the proper experience. You have to hope that someone will give you a chance to prove yourself," he said.
But the hope of a job coming his way is reason enough to try. Bass Pro Shops human resource manager Doug Pilarski says they are hiring for the holiday season. "Santa will be there until December 26th and that creates jobs because we have to have employees ready to take care of customers," he said.
Department stores including Macy's and Kohls are also taking on extra workers. Kohl's says they typically hire 20 more associates at each store during this time of the year.
UPS is another big employer. In Las Vegas they are hiring 500 driver assistants for the holidays. "Fast paced -- be able to lift heavy package. Non-stop work and it is very customer orientated as well," said Francine Quintero with UPS.
Though Keeley didn't land a job today, he says knowing he's got a shot gives him something to look forward to.
Many of the employers say the seasonal jobs will start in November and end on December 26th. Applications are now being taken.
