Some local college students are spending Nevada Day doing good deeds. They're providing their labor and skills to help perk up the north part of Las Vegas.

The Holy Trinity Church Las Vegas Blvd. and Lake Mead had been neglected and badly needed a makeover. Congregation member's prayers were answered by engineering students from UNLV.

"There was some graffiti on front of the church and a lot of the old paint was peeling off," said church member James Hunt.

Hunt and committee members at Holy Trinity decided it was time for a change. But hiring professionals to beautify their place of worship was out of the question. "We wouldn't have been able to afford the labor," he said.

So they asked UNLV engineering students if they would take on the task. Early Friday morning, students began stripping old paint in order to put on a fresh new coat. "It's a lot of work, not just supply side but getting everyone organized and seeing what you need for equipment," said student Vik Sehdev.

Even the dean of the College of Engineering jumped in to help. "I'm really proud of the students. I'm just here as a hired hand. They arranged it did all and did all the work, I'm just here to support them and do whatever I can," said Eric Sandgren. "It's a bigger job than we thought."

It's the one assignment they're not getting graded on, but are still making sure to do their best. "It's a team effort. Hopefully, this becomes a tradition every year we pick one from College of Engineering and give back," said Sehdev.

And for their, efforts church members are thankful. "It's just wonderful. We couldn't do it without them," said Hunt.

Students also did some minor work inside the church, but the majority of their time was consumed painting every last bit of the outside. It really did look brand new afterwards.
