Police on the Lookout for Drunk Drivers

Posted: Updated:

Halloween can be a scary night to be on the road with more people drinking and driving.

AAA says the number of fatal crashes increases by 40-percent in years when halloween falls on a weekend. That's why they're again offering Tipsy Tow. One of their trucks will give you a ride home and tow your car if you've had too much to drink.

It starts Saturday and the first five miles are free. But for those drivers who make the wrong the choice and get behind the wheel, police say they'll be watching.

As trick or treaters were out hunting for candy four years ago, two drivers and one pedestrian died in three separate car crashes. They all happened on Halloween night. "Some people don't understand that a car is like a 2,000 to 4,000 pound weapon," said Metro Sgt. David Gordon.

Sgt. Gordon says those people who don't understand will end up inside their DUI van. He says Metro, Henderson and North Las Vegas Police are stepping up patrols all over the valley this weekend.

Metro won't be setting up DUI checkpoints but they'll just have more officers on the road watching for cues. "Falling to maintain travel lane, red light violations. Any type of driving infraction that might involve coordination might cue a police officer to know the driver might be impaired," he said.

And to help keep impaired drivers off the road, AAA says they'll give you a ride home for free. "If you call a Tipsy Tow over Halloween, you'll hop in the cab, the driver like Darren here will hook your car up and we'll take you and your car home for free," said spokesman Michael Geeser.

Geeser says you don't have to be a member and you won't have to give your name, but only the first 5 miles are free. AAA says it's their way to help people make the right choice and keep every little ghost and goblins safe this Halloween.

All you have to do is call 1-800-222-4357 and tell the operator you need a Tipsy Tow.
