Experts will tell you the UNLV 1990 championship team is the best college team ever. Most of those players were back in Las Vegas Monday night to recognize the 20th anniversary of win.
Greg Anthony scored the first basket and James Jones scored the last. In between the two was 40 minutes of utter domination with UNLV beating Duke 103 to 73.
“We couldn't have imagined what the outcome would've been. We just know we were physically and mentally prepared for that game,” said UNLV All-American Larry Johnson.
“We could smell the blood in the water and see the fear in their eyes,” said David Butler.
They got to re-live it all. The UNLV basketball team, which no one will ever forget, celebrated 20 years since winning the NCAA championship. “It was so long ago, but it seems like it was just yesterday,” said Moses Scurry.
“All the guys talk. We get together, we reminisce about the good old days and the beauty of it for us is, they are good old days because we were able to win a national championship,” said Anthony.
“They were just a great group. I can't tell you how happy I am to revisit with all of them,” said head coach Jerry Tarkanian.
And for that they can thank Lon Kruger. He's embraced this programs' past while many others resisted. “The way he's bringing everybody back and trying to bring it back together, we just respect him and thank him for that,” said Johnson.
“Lon's been a great supporter and we're totally happy about that,” said Tarkanian.
Not nearly as happy they made the fans of this city 20 years ago.
