Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Corrections Officer Daniel Leach was involved in a fatal accident on U.S. 95 southbound near Searchlight early Saturday morning.
Officer Leach, who was assigned to the Laughlin Tucker Holding Facility, was killed shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday after his transport vehicle hit a truck hauling a trailer in a T-bone fashion as that truck crossed into the officers lane.
Leach, a 25-year-veteran of the force, was driving the prison transport vehicle from the Clark County Detention Center to the facility in Laughlin at the time of the accident.
The driver and passenger of the truck were not injured and were cooperating fully with Metro's investigation of this accident. At this time there is no word whether Officer Leach was wearing his seat belt or if speed played a role in this accident.
Officer Leach, 49, of Boulder City is survived by his wife Laura, son Christopher, daughter Alexandra, mother Sandra Leach, father James Leach, brother Michael leach, and sister Audrey Rehmer.
Officer Leach's death marks the second Metro officer to die in less than a week. Early Thursday morning off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Trevor Nettleton was shot to death in a attempted robbery at his home in North Las Vegas.
