The Injured Police Officers Fund or IPOF is an organization committed to honoring fallen officers by raising thousands of dollars to help their families make it through a difficult time.
The loss of an officer is one that brings the community together in many ways. The Injured Police Officers Fund first started in 1982 to help officers who were injured. Now that fund extends to officers killed while on duty.
Trooper Alan Davidson is the President of IPOF. He says the funds are depleted. "Right now the need is more than ever with 4 officers killed in the last 6 months in the line of duty,"says Davidson.
Each fallen officer's family gets 25 thousand dollars in what's called the death benefit. A small token of appreciation. Davidson is asking the community for help in honoring these men for their sacrifices. "When it gets down to this point we don't know where to go," says Davidson.
Officer Daniel Leach was the latest killed. He was driving a prisoner transport van Saturday morning when he crashed into a trailer truck. The reaction sent shudders across all law enforcement agencies.
"It was a large gasp it can't be, another one just happened three days ago"says Davidson.
Officer Trevor Nettleton was murdered earlier in the week. He was randomly attacked by three men in his garage. He had just come home from his swing shift. Officer Milburn Beitel and Officer James Manor both lost their lives this year in a separate fatal car accidents.
While these officers are sent off in the decorated manner they deserve IPOF aims to take care of the families who are left behind. If you would like more information on how to donate to the Injured Police Officers Fund click here.
