(Nov. 16) -- The history of the Desert Inn hotel dates back to 1950 when it first opened its doors. At that time, only four other hotels were open along the Las Vegas Strip. Those hotels included El Rancho, which opened in 1941, Hotel Last Frontier, now the New Frontier, which opened in 1942. The Flamingo hotel opened with 105 rooms in 1946 and the Thunderbird opened its doors in 1948.
The Desert Inn hotel, once owned by Howard Hughes, was considered a second home to many famous faces. In the 1960s, the hotel begin to undergo major renovations to compete with newer hotels such as the Sahara and Sands resorts. The hotel then closed for business in August of 2000.
In 2001, 240 pounds of explosives brought down the first tower to make way for the Wynn Las Vegas resort.
