Doctor Arrested Facing More Child Porn Charges

(Dec. 20) -- He is a pediatric doctor who is described as being "deeply dedicated to children." but police say he sexually abused them. Dr. David Evans was arrested on Thursday for possessing child pornography. He's now facing new charges.

Dr. David Evans will make his first court appearance Tuesday morning.  Meanwhile, a joint Sexual Assault Task Force , Metro police and the FBI continue to investigate whether there are more victims out there.

Dr. David Evans was arrested on Thursday night at his northwest Las Vegas home after Metro police were tipped off that he may be in possession of child pornography. After a joint investigation with the FBI, Dr. Evans was initially charged with 40 counts of possession of child pornography. Authorities believe he took the photos himself.

Another source tells Channel 8 Eyewitness News that one of the victims may be of a child relative. It was less than 24 hours later that police charged Dr. Evans with 19 additional counts of sexual assault, lewdness of a minor and use of a minor in child pornography.

What makes these charges a concern for authorities is that the doctor is a pediatric resident at both University Medical Center and Sunrise hospitals. According to the University of Nevada's School of Medicine website, the school in which Dr. Evans was being supervised, Dr. Evans attended Brigham Young University for undergraduate studies and then attended St. George's University in the West Indies for medical school.

On that website, Dr. Evans is also described as being involved with youth sports, being a rape crisis counselor, a mentor for underprivileged children and "being deeply dedicated to children." It is that reason that police are concerned that his involvement with children could lead them to more victims.

If parents believe their children have come in contact with Dr. Evans in an inappropriate manner, they should call Metro police at 229-3421.

(Dec. 17) -- It's a story channel 8 Eyewitness News was first to bring you -- a resident doctor here in Las Vegas has been arrested for possesion of child pornography. He could face live in prison if convicted.

Police say 32-year-old Dr. David Evans worked here at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital.. He was arrested Thursday. Police say they received a tip that Evans had child pornography on his home computer.

David Evans has been a resident at UMC for nearly a year now. In that time span, police say he could have been in contact with a number of children. Police searched Evans' home Thursday looking for more evidence of child pornography. Sources say Evans had pictures of children on his computer, including a child who may be a relative.

A neighbor of Evans said, "He has been a very good neighbor. Very quiet, I'm kind of shocked."

This neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, was suprised to hear Evans was arrested. She says he has never caused trouble, nor posed a threat to neighborhood children. "All I know is he doesn't seem to be that type. I hope this gets resolved and I hope for our sake and the community here that it is not true."

Sgt. Russ Shoemaker said, "It appears it's not an isolated incident. At this point our investigation continues both locally and nationally."

Sgt. Shoemaker with the Las Vegas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force says Evans problems may not just be stuck here. Not only has he been charged with 40 counts of possession of child pornograpy.

But Shoemaker says there's a definite possibility he could face out state or federal charges. "Dr. Evans has lived in 3 states recently. Both Nevada, California and Idaho. He's also resided on the island of Grenada where he went to medical school. And we're making contact with each and every location that he was at."

Police believe Evans took some of the pictures himself but can't be charged with felony production until they prove the pictures were taken here in Nevada. Each conviction here in Clark County carries up to 6 years in prison.

If Evans convicted, he could face life in prison.

Friday night there are new charges against Dr. Evans. He has been rebooked on 6 counts of sexual assault, 10 counts of lewdness with a minor and 3 counts of use of a minor in child porn.

Metro's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force asks if you have any further information about Dr. Evans, you should contact 229-3421.
