Exact Cause of Polly's Accident Still Unknown

It's been just over 24 hours since we learned about and shared with you the news of the tragic death of our co-worker and friend, Channel 8 Eyewitness News anchor Polly Gonzalez. And Tuesday night we continue to struggle with the grief and sadness.

The California Highway Patrol says it could take several weeks to determine the exact cause of the crash that led to Polly's death.

Here's what CHP does know: Polly's vehicle veered off the road on State Route 127, about 15 miles north of Baker, California. It's a remote two-lane highway with a dirt shoulder.

The CHP says Polly was apparently not speeding when for some reason her SUV drifted off the roadway. She tried to get it back on the roadway, but lost control and the Ford Explorer rolled.

California Highway Patrol will do a mechanical inspection of the vehicle. They will also perform a 24-hour profile of Polly looking back at what she did the day before the crash to see if it provides answers.

Iinvestigators have not ruled out the possibility she fell asleep at the wheel, or was temporarily distracted and took her eyes off the road.

Her daughters suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

The SUV Polly was driving suffered serious damage to the driver's side of the roof and this particular vehicle has been questioned for safety in the past.

The Ford Explorer has been in the news over the past few years because of rollover problems.
