New Child Database to Protect Your Children

It is amazing new technology to protect your children from being kidnapped, and it is now available here in the valley. It is called the "Children's Identification And Location Database" and it will read your child's eye imprint to uniquely identify them. Eyewitness News reporter Cindy Cesare got a sneak peak at the program and tells you how it works.

With a couple of clicks of the camera 7-year-old Makeynna Meegan has all her personal information stored in a database and on a personal ID card.

Makyenna Meegan says, "It says my height, my weight, hair color, my eyes, my parent guardian, my telephone number and emergency telephone number."

But it also reads her iris -- essentially, an eye-imprint. So, if she was ever kidnapped and found, it would immediately identify her through the Child Project Database.

Sean Mullin, the president of the Child Project says, "The iris is the most unique feature on the human body. And one of the reasons is because the color, the pigmentation, is determined by your ancestors and DNA."

Metro Police is the seventh police agency in the country to receive this equipment. One camera with computer hook-up costs $25,000. Two local companies and a local family donated the first one.  Metro Police plan on taking the equipment to fairs, malls and other school programs to register as many children as possible.

Sgt. Tom Wagner, with Metro Missing Persons, says, "Not only help prevent, and I think that's the key -- prevention. A lot of parents don't take the preventative actions. But if this is a tool we can use to prevent an abduction, those things are working in our favor in law enforcement."

Police will be making this database available to all valley families and believe it will be just as helpful to elderly people with poor memories who may wander from their home.
