Clark County Continues Helping Hurricane Evacuees

Clark County is still helping hurricane evacuees, even though the Federal Emergency Management Agency stopped sending them to Nevada.

Fertitta Community Center served 1,400 evacuees since opening the center last Wednesday, Sept. 7th.

The American Red Cross Southern Nevada office has served more than a 1,000 evacuees and handed out more than $318,000 in financial help so far.

So far, 190 families have been placed in assisted housing.

And 55 students have registered with the Clark County School District.

Some members of a local church are opening up their hearts and homes to New Orleans evacuees. Central Christian Church bussed more than 1,700 homeless families here from the Big Easy.

Sixty displaced people will stay with church members until they find jobs and get settled in the Las Vegas Valley.

Gilbert Seals lost everything. He and his family came here with just the clothes on their backs. He says he's blessed to have people like the ones who took his family in. "One of the kindest things I ever seen. For somebody to reach out and actually bring us down here and look out for us. I'm overjoyed."

All expenses for the bus, food and gas were paid for by members of Central Christian Church.
