Marc Anthony Colon in Las Vegas court on March 20, 2006
Crystal Figueroa
Attorney Dayvid Figler will be representing Colon
Gladys Perez, Crystal's mother, in courtMarc Anthony Colon, wanted in connection for the murder of Crystal Figueroa, made his first Clark County courtroom appearance Monday morning.
Colon faces first-degree murder and child abuse charges for the death of Figueroa. He is accused of beating the three-year-old to death and leaving her in a trash dumpster at a local apartment complex before fleeing Las Vegas.
He made his courtroom appearance via a video monitor from the Clark County Detention Center where he is being held. He was also assigned a court-appointed attorney during today's proceeding.
Attorney Dayvid Figler will be representing 28-year-old Colon. Figler is hoping 24-year-old Gladys Perez and his client will be tried separately in the death of Crystal Figueroa. However, the district attorneys' office is hoping to try them both together. Perez, Crystal's mother, is Colon's girlfriend.
"When you have two people accused of something so heinous as this particular case, there might be some finger-pointing and inconsistencies in versions of what occurred," said Figler. Although, District Attorney Christopher Lalli believes otherwise:
"It makes most sense to try them together, it saves us from trying them twice, there's one jury, one court proceeding, so from an efficiency standpoint, it's favored by the court."
Both Perez and Colon are scheduled to have their preliminary hearing on March 30. They are being held in separate areas at the Clark County Detention Center.
In January, Crystal's body was found in a dumpster and for six weeks her identity was unknown. She was referred to as Jane Cordova Doe until she was reported missing by a grandmother in California. Shortly after that missing person's report, the girl's mother, Gladys Perez was arrested.
Her boyfriend, Marc Anthony Colon, was arrested on a parole violation in Minnesota and had been waiting to be transferred to Nevada.
