What would you do to win a free turkey -- just in time for the holiday? If you're a middle school student -- you'll run your little heart out! Eyewitness News went to Leid Middle School, where being fit and fast, means a free frozen turkey.
Hundreds of students raced for a free 20-pound bird, passing the inflatable turkey and trotting to the finish line.
In all about three dozen turkeys were up for grabs! Shan McDonald of Leid Middle School says the event involves both mental and physical prowess. "What's really exciting is not just those that run well, it is all kids in PE class really put an effort forward and that's really fun to see."
Sixth grader Austin Fowble was a favorite to win the nearly one-mile race around the school.
Katie McClure also won a turkey. She says her parents really wanted her to win. "They said they wanted a turkey so she wouldn't have to buy one. Now they won't have to buy one."
