The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), along with the Nevada Department of Transportation, will be activating freeway ramp meters along I-15 on Feb. 13th, and Feb. 27, 2007.
Here is a list of Ramp Meters that will turn on:
Northbound:
Spring Mountain
Flamingo
Tropicana
Southbound:
Charleston
Sahara
Spring Mountain
Flamingo
On Feb. 27, the northbound and southbound ramps of Russell Rd. will be activated.
A ramp meter is a traffic signal, with only a red and a green light, which controls cars merging onto the freeway. Computers and cameras on the ramp and freeway determine how quickly drivers may safely enter the freeway. Equipment measures traffic speed and volume on the freeway and traffic on the ramp to determine when drivers can merge onto the freeway.
The meters are designed to increase safety and traffic movement, decrease congestion and improve air quality. They will operate only when the freeway is congested, usually during morning and evening commute times. Failure to stop at a ramp meter when it is in operation is a traffic violation similar to running a red light.
