Warm Spring Brings Early Bee Season to Valley

Our warm Spring has brought beautiful flowers to the valley. Unfortunately it's also brought an early bee season, and the big concern is killer bees have now colonized in Las Vegas.

Pest control technicians are the ones to call to clean up the nests. They say last month was one of their busiest months ever, responding to two to three calls a day. But some of these bees are getting more aggressive and attack in greater numbers.

Rick Cox takes on bugs every day. He's a pest control technician who specializes in getting rid of bees.

"There is a certain amount of fear involved with bees when people walk outside and find a big ball of bees hanging out in their doorway," said Cox.

Rick has been busy to say the least. "Last month in March -- I was a little more busy than I was in March last year."

Warmer weather created an early bloom, allowing dormant, more aggressive bees to become active earlier. Just last week, Cox was stung multiple times by killer bees at a job in North Las Vegas.

"Being covered in bees, I couldn't go back into the house," said Cox. "So I got stuck on the rooftop, and I got stung pretty good that day."

The uninvited guests love to make nests in homes, but Cox has a suggestion. "Just check around your house for cracks and gaps, and see if you can block those up so you don't have them into your house. Check your stucco around corners and things like that."

Catching those problem areas early will prevent uninvited bees from calling your home their home and make it a safer for everyone. Cox says as the weather continues to get warmer, you will start seeing more bees.

Never try to destroy a nest yourself with a hose or even wasp spray. And if they are killer bees, the danger is greater. So always call a pest control tech to do it.
