New Bill Strengthens Regulation of Auto Repair Shops

State lawmakers voted to strengthen regulation of auto repair shops, in no small part, because of a Channel 8 I-Team investigation.

Speaker Barbara Buckley is the sponsor of Assembly Bill 393. She told fellow legislators the current system is a license to rip people off. Her bill will streamline the regulatory process naming the Department of Motor Vehicles as the place to lodge consumer complaints.

The DMV has the authority to shut down crooked repair shops.

Buckley also played portions of an I-Team report chronicling a sting of some Purrfect Auto Repair shops.

The bill provides additional money for the attorney general's Bureau of Consumer Protection to do more undercover investigations.
