Security Tightened at Nevada Airports

Although the United States has not elevated its terror alert, McCarran International Airport is beefing up security following the terrorist attacks in Great Britain.

Airport officials will not describe details of the increased security measures except to say staffing levels have been increased at the departure and ticketing areas as well as the baggage claim. If you are driving to the airport, a vehicle checkpoint has been set up at the departing flights terminal and police are randomly checking vehicles.

Metro Sgt. Brent Becker says he is on the lookout for anything that seem suspicious.

"You can tell when someone is traveling. People have suitcases, they're going to ticketing, going to security checkpoints. People, for the most part, don't hang around the airport for a long time unless there is a delay on a flight," Becker said.

"I guess I'm so used to it," said Cindy Duvall, a traveler who says she has adjusted to the extra security and doesn't mind.

McCarran is the sixth busiest airport in the U.S. So far, nearly 20-million people have flown through McCarran. Other major U.S. airports are also tightening security following the vehicle explosion at the Glasgow airport.

"There's really not a whole lot you can do about it. It's kind of amazing that we haven't seen a suicide car bomb plot here," said Kyle McClellen, traveler.

British authorities have said they believe the incident at the Glasgow airport is related to a Friday's thwarted car bomb plot in London.  So far, eight suspects have been arrested, including two doctors. A witness said police were closing in on the terror network minutes before the attackers rammed their vehicle into the Scottish airport terminal building. Security is very tight and visible in London and Scotland.

Britain has raised its terror alert to the highest level. At this time the U.S. has not elevated its terror alert. The TSA is urging travelers to follow the rules regarding carry-on baggage and arrive a little earlier at the airport and to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.
