I-Team Has Police Report in Turnberry Place Death Case

Updated:

The police report on the death of a young woman in the luxury condo of a former high ranking hotel executive reveals new details. That police report had been missing, and now only the Channel 8 I-Team has it.

This case generated national attention because Metro Police initially said it did not prepare a police report in this case.

Late Wednesday the police department told the I-Team, yes, a report had been prepared but that it could not be located.

On Thursday, we were told two numbers on the report had been transposed, so the incident report did not come up during an initial records search.

At the time of the 911 call, 42-year-old Walter "Ed" Scheetz was the CEO of Morgans Hotel Group, which had just purchased the Hard Rock hotel.

Twenty-three-year-old Michelle Hatchel from Colorado was dead inside his condo at Turnberry Place. For weeks, Hatchel's family has been asking, why no Metro Police report?

Carrie Barker, Hatchel's aunt, said, "What really disturbs me is when somebody dies in Denver, there is a report. There was none of that with Las Vegas police, none of that."

Again, a Metro spokesman says initial searches for the report failed because two file numbers were transposed.

But now -- for the first time -- the I-Team is getting Ed Scheetz's side of the story.

Scheetz says Hatchel went to the Pure nightclub and returned to the condo about at about 3 a.m. on the 29th. Scheetz says Hatchel "appeared to be fine" when he left for work. But when he returned home at 8 p.m. that night, Scheetz says he immediately placed the call to 911.

Ed Scheetz: "Hello, hello. I just got home from work and my girlfriend's here but she's dead, laying in bed."

911 dispatcher: "How old is she?"

Ed Scheetz: "Uh, she's 24."

911 dispatcher: "Okay. And is she conscious and breathing right now?"

Ed Scheetz: "She's. I think, she's cold. She's cold, honey. I, you know."

911 dispatcher: "No breathing at all?"

Ed Scheetz: "Um, no. She won't breathe. She won't wake up. She's not breathing."

Scheetz told detectives that Hatchel used illegal narcotics. The report says officers found a "white powdery substance" near Hatchel's purse.

The night before her death, Hatchel sent this text message about her visit with Scheetz: "i am not having fun! i can't believe how much coke he does all the time. all day long he keeps leaving me to talk to 2 talk 2 a girl he dated."

The corner determined Hatchel died of an overdose of oxycodone combined with cocaine.

Hatchel's aunt, Carrie Barker said, "But it does not tell us the answer as to why or where did the drugs come from that took her life? That's the question that's unanswered."

Ed Scheetz left the Morgans Hotel Group just three weeks after this incident.

The I-Team did make contact Thursday with Brandy Bergman who is a New York-based spokesman for Scheetz. Bergman told us neither she nor Scheetz will make any comment.
