The coroner's office agrees Trenton Quick's death was a murder. An autopsy report says the boy died from blunt abdominal trauma.
His mother and her boyfriend sit in jail, waiting for their first court appearance. Meanwhile, their family members are trying to piece all of this together.
Always smiling -- it's just one way friends and family describe 4-year-old Trenton Quick.
"He was full of life. He was just this little boy, if you told him to do something, he did it. He just wanted to play. He was a happy little boy," said Donna Carter.
Trevor Carter, 21, has been charged with first degree murder and child abuse. His mother, Donna Carter, is still in disbelief.
"My son is not the murderer everyone is making him out to be. He's not," she said. Carter says her son's relationship with the children was good.
"Those children called my son Daddy. That's how much they cared for him," she said.
The children's mother, 24-year-old Amber Scott also sits in jail, charged with three counts of child abuse.
"She don't know what to do. She has lost her baby, and she is being accused of stuff. She doesn't think she did anything wrong," said Carter.
But it's what may have happened behind closed doors that worries family members most. While they don't want to believe child abuse ever took place, they don't know for sure.
Meanwhile, North Las Vegas police continue to say the car accident that Carter claimed killed Trenton was staged to cover up child abuse, while family members chose to believe this was an accident.
"Kids do get hurt. It is possible that he got hurt at home somehow, and he didn't know. That's the only thing I can think of," said Carter.
But now family members are facing the harsh reality things may not have been as perfect as it seemed.
Carter and Scott will make their first appearance in court Friday morning. The couple had been together for about two years, raising Scott's three children.
The other two children are in protective custody.
