Power Restored to Las Vegas Strip Hotels

Updated:

Several casinos were dark on the Las Vegas skyline Tuesday night. Mandalay Bay, the Four Seasons, the Luxor and Excalibur hotels all lost power.

Casino guests say a large explosion happened before lights went out, but back up generators kicked into high gear quickly.

The generators brought power to the casino floor, but the hotel rooms and elevators were in the dark for more than an hour.

Clark County Fire officials say a transformer caught fire just before 8 p.m. near Harmon and Adurey, leaving a section of the city in the dark.

Fire crews were rushing to free people who are trapped in elevators. Scott Allison with CCFD said that although people were stuck, no one was in danger.

"We've been going with engineering with every hotel and every property and getting people out of elevators. Otis Elevator is also here. That what we are doing right now, our heavy rescue team is on scene as well as paramedics and firefighters," he said.

Rescue crews were able to look at the elevator panels and find out which floors they were stuck on. They are not sure how many people were trapped in the elevators.

As they worked to get the people out, Nevada Power crews are trying to figure out what caused that transformer to catch fire and leave the hotels in the dark.

At about 9 p.m., the lights inside the Excalibur came back on and about a half hour later, power inside the Luxor was restored. The Mandalay Bay and Four Seasons finally got power restored around 9:30 p.m.
