Parents of seventh graders need to be reminded their children need to be vaccinated for whooping cough before the first day of school. Local health officials are requiring booster shots this school year because of a small outbreak of whooping cough.
At least half of all 33,000 seventh graders still do not have their booster shots.

For that reason, Health District Immunization Manager Veronica Morata-Nichols urges parents not to put off the shots until the last minute, "They will be sent home by the CCSD if their shots are not up to date. If you wait until the last minute, or if you wait to the first day of school, I can guarantee you that the wait will be about three to four hours on those days."
Nichols says they expect to send home as many as 5,000 kids who aren't up to date on their vaccinations.
To ease the load, clinics are being held this Saturday at the Boulevard Mall and at the health district on Shadow Lane. Private physicians also have the same vaccine.
