Will Taxpayers Subsidize UMC's $6 Million Loss?

(Aug. 5) -- University Medical Center trustees say the hospital must care even for the uninsured, but that has come at a hefty price.

University Medical Center is reportedly losing $6 million this fiscal year. Now Clark County taxpayers may be asked to subsidize the hospital budget for the first time in a decade.

Hospital officials blame an increase in uninsured patients for the budget shortfall. Take a look at how the numbers have increased over the years. At the end of 2000, UMC saw 119,000 patients without insurance. That number ballooned to 142,000 in the fiscal year ending in 2001 -- that's an increase of more than 23,000.
