Rezoning Proposal Rattles Parents

Updated:

Parents still reeling from the news that deep cuts are coming to their kids' schools are now waging another battle as they try to keep their teenagers from being rezoned to different high schools.

The Attendance Zone Advisory Commission, or AZAC, got a taste of what to expect as they start to tackle rezoning for the next school year.

Thursday morning, parents packed into the school trustee's boardroom to voice their concerns about a proposal to rezone their children from Coronado High School.

"They were going to take Seven Hills and cut a big hole right out of it, just like a biopsy, and those children were going to be bused," said Nicki Fazio, parent of a Coronado student.

The committee agreed there were no good options and said it will look for a compromise that does not include moving any Seven Hills students out of Coronado. Currently, the school is 30-percent over capacity.

AZAC does have the tough job at looking at schools around the valley that are overcrowded and finding solutions.

At its next meeting on Nov. 25, the committee will look at elementary schools including Keller, Adams, Brookman, Cambeiro, Ira. J. Earl, Edward, Goldfarb, Gragson, Herr, Hewetson, Hickey, Hollingsworth, Iverson, Martin L. King, Long, Lunt, Mendoza, Moore, Mountain View, Ronnow, Rundle, Snyder, Stanford, Sunrise Acres, Wengert. They also plan to discuss Bonner, Givens, Piggott and Staton Elementary and look at Johnson and Rogich Middle Schools.
