(Sept. 30) -- Several lawmakers are pushing for a state lottery to reduce Nevada's budget deficit. The state's budget is more than $300 million in the red, and some say a state lottery could help replenish the funds without new taxes.
But Nevadans have mixed opinions about the idea.
"I am surprised we haven't gotten it already," said resident William Hines. "Considering gaming is already legal here, it seems like we're behind the power curve, as many people drive to the state line to play it. Keep those people here, funds in our own pockets."
"I think you need to be careful when you're talking about creating a business that would compete with the tourism industry, given the large presence it has in our lives here in Nevada," said resident Rob Stillwell.
According to Nevada's constitution, a state lottery is against the law. Any changes would take at least five years.
